This item describes how to develop and debug the XMPP Spark client via Eclipse.


  • OS: Mac OS X 10.9.3
  • Java: Java 6 64-Bit
  • Eclipse: Eclipse Juno


  1. Download the source from GitHub.

    • Notes: for the purpose of using Java 6 to compile it, I check out the commit "19854c0b247a319ee3b2611bf7fd0da53c40c4c8" which was committed at "February 3, 2014 at 5:01:50 PM GMT+1".
  2. Eclipse : File -> New -> Other -> Java -> Java Project from Existing Ant Buildfile
  3. In "New Java Project" dialog, set the following fields:
    1. Ant buildfile: chooses "<src_folder_in_fs>/build/build.xml".
    2. Select javac declaration to use to define project: chooses the target "build".
    3. Project name: names it as you like, e.g. "mySpark".
  4. Changes the attribute of this project
    1. Java Build Path -> Libraries: press button "Add Library..." and choose a valid "JRE System Library".
    2. Run/Debug Settings -> Main : Main class: org.jivesoftware.launcher.Startup
    3. Run/Debug Settings -> Classpath : Adds "<src_folder_in_fs>/src/resources" to "User Entities".
  5. For being able to open the "Preferences" dialog, you need to run Spark in 32-bit mode by:
    1. Run/Debug Settings -> Arguments (tab) -> Programa Arguments -> Types '-d32'
